Actress Zoe Kravitz sparked backlash on Twitter earlier this year, which led to her ‘cancellation’. So, what happened?
The Batman actress starred as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, in the 2022 movie alongside Robert Pattinson.
She was the target of a viral cancel culture moment a few months ago but it appears some of her fans weren’t even aware why she was ‘cancelled’ in the first place.
As reported by Nylon, Zoe Kravitz found herself in the middle of controversy when she addressed Will Smith’s infamous slap of comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.
The Batman actress was one of many celebrities who decided to weigh in on the situation and offer her thoughts on Instagram.
She uploaded two since-deleted pictures, the first one featuring her on the red carpet alongside the caption: “Here’s a picture of my dress at the award show where we are apparently assaulting people on stage now.”
Under her second post, Zoe wrote: “And here is a picture of my dress at the party after the award show – where we are apparently screaming profanities and assaulting people on stage now.”
Why was she ‘cancelled’?
Zoe’s Instagram posts garnered a lot of attention and prompted internet sleuths to uncover past comments she made about Will’s son, Jaden, when he was 14 years old.
During an interview with V Magazine for their June 2013 issue, she was asked about Jaden and said: “There were moments I was hanging out with Jaden and thinking, I can’t believe you’re 14, I have to check myself, like what I say to you.
“He has so much personality and so much swag, he is so much cooler than I am. And he’s so handsome. I was always like, when you’re older, you know, we’ll hang out. Nope, that’s inappropriate, you’re 14.”
Zoe was 24, while Jaden was 14, and the age difference at the time of her interview seemed to trigger her ‘cancellation’ on social media.
Why is this trending again?
Every now and then celebrities are subjected to the ‘cancel’ culture phenomenon – when some people turn against them if they disagree with their opinions or actions.
The reason Zoe’s ‘cancellation’ is back in the limelight is a viral Twitter post from Monday, June 27, 2022.
“The night Zoe Kravitz was cancelled was a top 5 twitter moment for me cause we were going after everyone it was insane,” the user tweeted.
The post has gained almost 4,000 retweets and 55.9k likes at this time, prompting other users to find out more about the background of the tweet.
Some things just won’t go away.
Lmao you mean the days following The Slap, which is what Zoe Kravitz was cancelled for speaking out about. The longest game of "is this you" that I'd ever seen on the internet.
