In 2015, the Houston Rockets selected Harrell with the 32nd overall pick. After appearing in only 39 games as a rookie, in his second year Harrell played 58 games and averaged 9.1 points per game, primarily off the bench. On January 8, 2017, he posted a career-high 28 points in only 26 minutes coming off the bench.

The Rockets traded seven players for Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul during the 2017 offseason. Harrell, Patrick Beverley, and Lou Williams all went on to play key roles for the Clippers in subsequent seasons. In 76 games last season, Harrell averaged 11 points per game.

Harrell re-signed with the Clippers in 2018. His next season was his best yet. Harrell averaged 26 minutes, 16 points, and 6.5 rebounds per game as a backup to DeAndre Jordan.

Harrell was known particularly for his tenacious offensive rebounding. With 32 points against the Dallas Mavericks, he set a new career high. The Clippers’ bench, led by Williams and Harrell, was one of the league’s best scoring units, with Harrell appearing in all 82 games.
