Meyer was not present when Day won all three games. Season 2019
Day guided the Buckeyes to a perfect 12-0 regular season record in 2019, his first campaign as a full-time head coach. This was the team’s first unbeaten regular season since 2013. Despite being projected to place second in the Big Ten East Division by Cleveland.com’s preseason poll for 2019, the Buckeyes won the division after defeating Penn State on November 23 and qualified for the Big Ten Championship, which they would go on to win by defeating Wisconsin 34-21. The second-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes fell to the Clemson Tigers in the Fiesta Bowl despite being the number two seed in the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes started the 2021 season, Day’s third full campaign as head coach, ranked fourth in both the AP and coaches’ polls.
Day guided Ohio State over a 9-game winning streak behind Heisman finalist CJ Stroud after an early-season upset by Oregon. Ohio State defeated Penn State, which was rated 20th at the time, and Michigan State, which was ranked 5. Ohio State was ranked No. 2 and Michigan was ranked No. 5 by the College Football Playoff committee heading into the Michigan matchup.
