UPDATE: East Moline Police Chief John Reynolds and United Township Superintendent Jay Morrow held a news conference Friday morning to discuss details of the high school lockdown.
According to Reynolds, the East Moline Police Department received a phone call on a non-emergency number at 8:42 a.m. from someone who said “they had a gun and they were going to use it at UT.”
The immediate threat was “unsubstantiated.”
“There was no sighting of anybody,” Reynolds said. “This was just a phone call.”
Police said there have been no arrests made and students are back in school.
“We felt we did what was best for the students,” Reynolds said.
“Our students were safe at all times,” Morrow added.
Police said no witnesses were found at the scene that saw anyone with a gun outside the school and reports of an officer tackling a man with a gun or “a gunman inside the school” were “rumors.”
“There are so many rumors I’ve already heard, we can’t possibly stop every rumor. … All we had was that there was a subject with a gun said he was going to take some type of action at UT,” Reynolds said.
