Early years
Dungy was born and raised in Jackson, Michigan. His parents were Wilbur Dungy, who taught science at Jackson College from 1926 to 2004, and Cleomae Dungy, who taught Shakespeare at Jackson High School from 1920 to 2002. Wilbur was a pilot in the Army Air Forces with the famous Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. After he graduated from Parkside High School in 1973, Dungy went to college at the University of Minnesota to play football. In 1975 and 1976, he was the most valuable quarterback for the Gophers. In 1977, he was given the Big Ten Medal of Honor, which is given to one student athlete from each Big Ten school’s graduating class who has shown both athletic and academic excellence during their time in college.
NFL career
After not getting picked in the draft, Dungy signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was turned into a defensive back and went on to play three seasons in the NFL. In 1978, he had his best season. That year, he picked off six passes and helped the Steelers win Super Bowl XIII.
Dungy is the only NFL player who has ever both picked off a pass and thrown an interception in the same game. Terry Bradshaw and Mike Kruczek both got hurt on October 9, 1977, during a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Houston Oilers. Dungy was the backup quarterback for the Steelers.
Coaching is a job

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Rich McKay hired Dungy as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on January 22, 1996. At the time, the Buccaneers were known for being a bad team, so McKay asked Dungy to fix them. Dungy and his defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, put in place a Cover 2 defense with a few changes. The result was the now-famous Tampa 2, but Dungy freely admitted that it was based on ideas he learned in Pittsburgh.
1998–2001
The Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII the following season, which was their first time in the championship game. Even though Dungy was fired and replaced by Jon Gruden the season before, he has been given credit for building the team.
Colts of Indianapolis
On January 22, 2002, the Indianapolis Colts hired Dungy as their head coach. At the time, the Colts were a very good offensive team but had a very bad defense. He put in place his “Tampa 2” defense right away and kept making changes to the Colts’ defense so that it fit his style. After joining the Colts, Dungy didn’t change much about Jim Mora’s high-powered offense, both in terms of how it was played and who was on it. Tom Moore, who was still the offensive coordinator, was brought back together with Dungy. Moore and Dungy had worked together in the past at Minnesota and Pittsburgh.
During his first few years with the Colts, Dungy had a hard time fixing their defense and had mixed results in the playoffs. In his first year as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, the team was shut out 41–0 by the New York Jets in a first-round playoff game. In 2003 and 2004, the Colts also lost playoff games to the New England Patriots (in the second round of the playoffs). In October 2005, Dungy signed a new three-year contract that paid him $5 million per year.
The Colts’ defensive play got a lot better during the 2006 playoffs. They beat the Kansas City Chiefs, holding one of the NFL’s best running backs to less than 50 yards, and they beat the Baltimore Ravens, who were the favorites, in the divisional round. On January 21, 2007, the Colts beat the New England Patriots to become the AFC Champions and move on to Super Bowl XLI. This was the biggest comeback in the history of conference championship games, as they were down 21–3 at the time.
On January 21, 2008, Dungy said that at least for the 2008 season, he would be back.
