The first trial for Magbanua’s murder of Markel ended in a mistrial in October 2019. However, the Covid-19 epidemic caused another case trial to be set for May 27, 2022. Magbanua sobbed in court on May 27 as the verdict of guilty against her was read aloud following an eight-hour jury deliberation.
Following the Markel family’s submission of a victim impact statement, Magbanua was given a life sentence for first-degree murder along with an additional 60 years for plotting to kill and soliciting to kill. Markel and Wendi Adelson once shared a marriage. Wendi Adelson, who had meticulously planned every detail of the crime, is sister to Charlie. Charlie Adelson was taken into custody in April and charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and encouragement to commit murder in relation to the passing of Markel.
