Losing the Megabus services in the Quad Cities could hurt the less fortunate.

Early next month, the bus company will no longer have stops in Davenport, Iowa City and Des Moines.

Some riders say it will have a negative impact on people with low-incomes.

“Anytime I hear people about riding buses, they’re like, ‘Oh, Megabus.’ I hear, I hear it a lot,” says Shawn Boyd

“It’s very economical for people that don’t have a lot of money,” said Philip Tate.

Megabus offers low prices to get to places like Des Moines or Chicago from Davenport.

Some worry that losing the service will affect people with lower incomes.

“They can afford a trip, but the Megabus would be the one, but if they take that out, they can’t travel because Greyhound and all that is expensive,” said Tameka Carter.

People can still get to many of the same places through Trailways or Greyhound, but travelers say it will cost more.

After pricing tickets, we’ve found Megabus is cheaper.

Sometimes by half as much, other times, by only a few dollars.

Still, Megabus Rider Shawn Boyd says sometimes a few dollars difference could make or break a trip.

“It’s going to be a lot of people missing out on what they have to do since… like out of town, with their families, they barely get to see,” said Boyd.

In a statement, Megabus’ corporate affairs director says they’re dropping some lines, like the one in Iowa, because of low gas prices, cheaper flights, and more rail services.

One local resident says he gets why they’re doing it.

“I haven’t seen the gas prices this low in quite some time because I remember when it was almost, four or five dollars a gallon. So, it is very reasonable, and a lot of people are renting cars, and driving. Then they can stay longer. Then they can stay at their convenience,” said Tate.

But Tate says it was the best option for people who are barely getting by.

“It’s the convenience and the reasonable price. A price that they can afford, that they can put into their budget, and still be able to accomplish what they set out to do,” said Tate.

The last day the Megabus will go through the quad cities is January 9th.
