Sola Onayiga, the famous Nollywood actress passed away on July 18 and the cause of death has not been determined. She is known for her role as Ireti in the family film Fuji House of Commotion.
Husseini Shaibu, a prominent film critic, revealed the news on Twitter, writing:
“I have just learned that the famous stage and screen actress and Fellow of the Dramatic Arts, Aunt Sola Awojobi Onayiga, passed away today.” Aunt Sola is best known for playing Ireti nicknamed Cooking Practice in the failed TV comedy ‘CHECKMATE!’ “Go safe, mom!”
The death of Sola Onayiga
According to some sources, although Onayiga’s cause of death has yet to be confirmed, she was taken to the ICU of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. However, the cause of Onayiga’s hospitalization is still unclear and more information is needed. The actor suffered from sickle cell anemia his whole life. Her family members have yet to make an official comment on the matter and it is not known if she has had any pre-existing health problems.
Sola Onayiga’s professional career
In 2015, the Social Democrats elected Sola Onayiga to represent Ikorodu’s 1st Constituency in the Lagos State House of Representatives. She finished high school and started working for the Federal Capital Development Agency (FCDA).
Sola said in an interview:
“I was hired as the interviewer; that is, I have consulted people who have traveled across the country about the possibility of Abuja becoming a Federal Capital Territory.” This happened sometime between 1976 and 1977. I was sent to Barracks Dodan to conduct interviews with soldiers.”

As a beginner, she made her acting debut in Fred Agbeyegbe’s The King Must Dance Naked, which was her first professional acting debut. She was professionally paid for the role of Queen Odosun, one of the main characters. After that, her supporters started calling her Queen Osun. She also appeared in Checkmate, as well as a few other Nollywood films.
Meanwhile, it was her presence at the Fuji House of Commotion that first brought her to national attention. Amaka Igwe produced and directed the comedy, which is a spin-off of the soap opera Checkmate. The plot of Fuji House of Commotion revolves around the life of a rich guy who is married to four women and has four children.

Sola Onayiga has emerged as a great actor throughout the years. As news of her death spread, Twitter was flooded with tributes. Some expressed their grief when they heard the news that the actress had passed away. Fans also remembered another Nollywood actor, Ada Ameh, and paid tribute to both Onayiga and Ameh. Some admirers have described the deaths of both women as “a rather bleak day for Nollywood.”
