Two years later, she moved to London with Tiffany. Shirley’s dance instructor Nina Hunt convinced her to audition for a dance partner with Sammy Stopford. In 1983, her greatest achievement was winning Professional Latin at the Black Dance Festival. Collectively, her greatest achievement was capturing Professional Latin at the 1995-1996 Blackpool Dance Festival.

In 1996, Ballas stopped competing in dance competitions and became a trainer and judge of ballroom and Latin American dance. Ballas has given master classes and commented on Dancing with the Stars. He joined the judging panel for series 15 of Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One on 9 September 2017, replacing Len Goodman as head judge.
