Paul Farmer, a famous American doctor and humanitarian passed away on February 21, 2022, at the age of 62, after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Sheila Davis, CEO of nonprofit firm Partners in Health, announced his death:

Partners in Health will fulfill Paul Farmer’s dream of making a positive difference in the world. Paul was a master at teaching others the need to support one another, show compassion for one another, and show solidarity. We send our condolences to his loved ones.

Farmer’s death was also noted by Dr. Anthony Fauci, Medical Adviser to the President of the United States:

“When it comes to public health, he is one of the most well-known and respected figures in the industry. Although he calls me a mentor, he is actually more of a mentor to me than I am to him.

According to Partners in Health, Paul Farmer died of a sudden heart attack while sleeping. He died in Rwanda, where he taught before being shot dead.

American anthropologist Paul Farmer is also a physician, philanthropist, and author recognized for his efforts to provide free healing to millions of disadvantaged people worldwide. He was born in North Adams, Massachusetts, on October 26, 1959 and raised in Weeki Wachee, Florida. Before entering Duke University as a Benjamin N. Duke Scholar, he graduated from Hernando High School. Immediately after finishing medical school, the doctor began working as a volunteer at a hospital in Haiti. In 1982, Farmer earned a distinguished degree in medical anthropology after completing a Bachelor of Arts degree.

In 1990, the anthropologist graduated from Harvard University with an MD and Ph.D. in medical anthropology and continues to work in Haiti. During his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1993, Farmer won a fellowship in infectious diseases, which he completed two years later. In 1987, Farmer co-founded the non-profit organization Partners in Health, whose purpose was to provide direct health care to those in need. The Boston-based company was founded in Cange, Haiti and has expanded to 16 locations across the United States.

Dr. Farmer has served on the board of directors of the Aristide Foundation for Democracy as editor-in-chief of the journal. Along with founding and serving on the Board of the Institute of Justice & Democracy in Haiti, his other accomplishments include teaching at the university level. Both PIVOT and Kageno Worldwide have humanitarian activists on their boards of directors and other nonprofit organizations. In addition, he serves on the boards of Incentives for Global Health and GlobeMed, where he has served as a global advisor. The School’s Advisory Council on Essential Medicines and the EqualHealth Board of Trustees include Paul Farmer. Throughout his career, he has worked to implement public health measures in response to tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and Ebola in developing countries.

In addition to writing 12 books in his lifetime, the doctor has also written Fevers, Revenge and Diamonds: Ebola and the Devastation of History, to be published in 2020.
