A 7-month-old baby girl died tragically in an early morning mobile home fire in South Carolina’s Midlands region on Friday, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The blaze broke out just before 6:30 a.m. at a mobile home near the 8800 block of Black River Road in Rembert, S.C., residents reported. While four occupants were able to escape and were transported to Kershaw Medical Center, the home’s infant occupant perished, local media reported.

The deceased child was identified by Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker as 7-month-old Oaklenn Wooten. She was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the fire.
Investigators said the victim’s family has been notified. An autopsy will be performed by the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston on Monday.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is reviewing the case. The sheriff’s office stated that investigating the death of a child is standard procedure for SLED.
“I, along with all of the deputies, officers and staff of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, extend our deepest sympathies to the family who has suffered this terrible loss. SLED will lead the investigation and we will await their findings to learn the cause of the fire,” Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said in a statement.
