De Vries was born on February 6, 1995, in the Dutch town of Uitwellingerga, where he grew up.

His first race was a kart race in the city of Sneek, where he was born. He started his career in 2004 and has won many titles, including the KF3 championship at the WSK, the German Junior Karting, and the CIK-FIA European championship.

In 2015, he drove with most of his teammates and was able to join the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, as well as the GP3 Series and the FIA Formula 2 Championship.

In 2008, De Vries won the German Junior Championship and the WSK World Series for the KF3 category. In 2009, he won the European KF3 Championship and kept both his German Junior and WSK World Series titles. He won the 2010 Karting World Championship in September. Formula Renault Eurocup

In 2012, de Vries moved to single-seaters, and R-ace GP gave him a seat in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. De Vries got his first podium finish with a second place at his first race in Alcaiz, and he was able to do it again at the Hungaroring. At the end of the season, De Vries was in fifth place, which was better than all of his teammates. De Vries also took part in several Formula Renault 2.0 NEC races, one of which he won at his home track in Assen. In eleven races, he finished on the podium four times, putting him tenth in the drivers’ standings.

2013

The next year, for his second season in the series, de Vries switched to Koiranen GP. At the Hungaroring and the Circuit de Catalunya, he won one race each, and at the end of the season, he was again in fifth place in the championship.

2014

De Vries stayed with Koiranen in 2014 and played in the Eurocup for the third time. He won six races, and in 11 of the 14 races he entered, he finished on the podium. He won the championship by a large margin over Dennis Olsen, who came in second. He had 254 points to Olsen’s 124. He also took part in the whole season of Alpine Formula Renault. He won 10 of the 14 races he entered, and only twice did he not finish in the top three.

Formula Renault 3.5 Series

In 2015, De Vries switched to racing for DAMS in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series. Before winning the last race of the season at the Circuito de Jerez, he was on the podium five times. With 160 points, he was third in the final standings, just behind Oliver Rowland and Matthieu Vaxivière.

In 2016, De Vries drove for ART Grand Prix in the GP3 Series. At the Red Bull Ring, he got his first podium by coming in third. In Budapest, he got his first pole. He didn’t win his first race until the second one at Monza. He won again at the Yas Marina Circuit at the end of the season. In the championship, he came in sixth, behind his teammates Charles Leclerc and Alexander Albon, who won the title and became vice-champion, respectively.

2017

In 2017, de Vries started racing with Rapax in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.

In the Monte Carlo sprint race, he won for the first time, and he won three more races before the summer break.

Before the race at Spa-Francorchamps, de Vries switched to Racing Engineering. At that race, he finished second with Racing Engineering. He finished seventh in the championship, which was the second-best finish of any rookie.

2018

For the 2018 season, de Vries moved to Prema Racing to work with Sean Gelael. His season got off to a slow start. He only made it to the podium twice in the first third of the season, which put him a long way behind his title rivals. The first race of the season that De Vries won was a sprint race at Le Castellet. After that, he didn’t get any points in Austria and had two finishes outside of the top five at Silverstone. After that, though, the Dutch driver’s performance got better, and he won the main races in Hungary and Belgium. Even though de Vries got his sixth podium of the season in the main race at Sochi, he didn’t make it into the top three in the standings. Alex Albon and Lando Norris beat him by 10 and 17 points, respectively.

2019

In 2019, de Vries stayed in Formula 2 and went back to his old team, ART Grand Prix, where he worked with the 2018 GP3 runner-up, Nikita Mazepin. His season got off to a good start with a podium finish in Baku and a win in a sprint race in Barcelona.  After that, he won from the pole in Monaco and won the main race at Le Castellet to take the lead in the championship. Two third-place finishes at the Red Bull Ring, one podium finish each at Silverstone and Budapest, and two more third-place finishes at Monza gave de Vries one hand on the trophy. After de Vries won his fourth and final race of the season at the penultimate race in Sochi, he was mathematically crowned the Formula 2 champion.

World Endurance Championships of the FIA

De Vries joined Racing Team Nederland on March 15, 2018, to race in the LMP2 class. On October 6, 2019, he won the 6 hours of Fuji with this team. It was their first win in this class. De Vries finished the race by driving the last leg of the race.

On July 6, 2020, it was announced that De Vries would be the test and back-up driver for Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe GmbH. He tests the Toyota TS050 Hybrid and the Toyota hypercar as part of his job.

During the test week before the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans, the ACO didn’t let Philippe Cimadomo, who drove for TDS Racing x Vaillante, start. He was already on the track because he was a backup driver for the Toyota Hypercar team. Because Philippe Cimadomo was a bronze driver and De Vries was a platinum driver, the car was moved from Pro/Am to Pro.

Seasons 2019–20

On September 11, 2019, it was announced that De Vries would be a driver for the new Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team for the 2019–20 Formula E season, along with Stoffel Vandoorne. This was after he was unable to find a seat in Formula One for the 2020 Formula One season.

The team’s record at the end of the season was 1-2, with Vandoorne ahead of De Vries, who was 11th with 60 points.
