Meteorologists from the National Weather Service are surveying storm damage from Tuesday evening’s severe weather outbreak. Damage reports are now coming in and so far 2 tornadoes have been confirmed, including an EF-2 tornado with winds of 130 mph in Hampton and Rapids City.
Tornado #1 – EF-2 – 130 mph winds – Rapids City, Hampton and East Moline (IL)
This tornado had a peak width of 200 yards and was one the ground for 4.8 miles. It’s responsible for 10 injuries and destroyed 4 homes in rural East Moline. Also did damage in Hampton and Rapids City. The tornado was on ground from 7:25 through 7:35pm. Tornado path map courtesy of NWS Quad Cities.
Tornado #2 – EF-0 – 85 mph winds – McCausland, IA
This tornado was on the ground for 1.2 miles and was 50 yards wide. It mainly caused damage to trees. This tornado was on the ground for 2 minutes starting at 7:33pm.
Tornado #3 – EF-1 – 90 mph winds – Low Moor, IA
This tornado was on the ground for 1.4 miles and caused 3 injuries. It had a maximum width of 75 yards and was on the ground from 7:49pm to 7:51pm. This tornado hit a mobile home park and destroyed 5 mobile homes and damaged others.
Tornado #4 – EF-1 – 95 mph winds – Andover, IA
This tornado had a maximum width of 300 yards and was on the ground for 3.4 miles from 7:57 to 8:01pm. Most damage from this tornado was to outbuildings and trees.
Tornado #5 – EF-2 – 115 mph winds – Good Hope to St Augustine, IL
This tornado was a half-mile wide at times! The maximum width was 900 yards as it traveled in the far Southern part of our viewing area. Over a 16 mile path this tornado severely damaged a few homes and caused quite a bit of damage to farm buildings and trees. (Original report from NWS had this max width as 1800 yards, later downgraded to 900 yds.)
Tornado #6 – EF-0 – 80 mph winds – Deer Grove, IL
On Friday the National Weather Service confirmed the 6th tornado from Tuesday night. This tornado uprooted a tree and damaged shingles and roofs on 2 homes. The tornado was 50 yards wide and on the ground for 1.5 miles in Whiteside County (IL.) The tornado ended at 8:38pm.
