He served as governor of the State of Mexico from 2005 to 2011, launching his presidential campaign just days after leaving office as governor. He is a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the country’s main political party, which ruled Mexico for 71 years until it was overthrown by the National Action Party (PAN) in 2000. Since the PRI was tainted by corruption, Pea La Nieto’s victory in 2012, which marked the return of the PRI after a 12-year sabbatical, was greeted with large demonstrations across the country.
