The Moline Foundation awarded $38,500 in scholarships to 29 college-bound students this spring.

Dolores A. Hulse-DiIulio Scholarship: Ava Gomez, graduate of Moline High School, $1,000.00. Gomez plans to attend University of IL, Champaign IL. The scholarship provides funds to a female student graduating from Moline High School who plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, engineering or pre-medicine. Mrs. Hulse-DiIulio was a chemistry teacher at Moline High School for 36 years, retiring in 1994.

Moline High School Class of ’59: Saneha Borisuth and Dana Plagenz, graduates of Moline High School, $1,000.00 each. Borisuth plans to major in Biological Sciences at the University of IL, Chicago, IL. Plagenz plans to major in Business at University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame IN. The fund was established by the MHS Class of 1959 as a way to commemorate their 50th class reunion. Funds are raised by class members and volunteers through various fundraisers.
                                              
Maggie Webb Scholarship: Jenna Martel, graduate of Moline High School $1,000.00. Martel plans to major in Nursing at Indiana State University, Terre Haute IN. The fund was established as a memorial to Maggie Webb, a 2001 graduate of Moline High School who was killed in December 2007 in a mass shooting at a retail store in an Omaha mall.

Clem T. Hanson Scholarship: Ava Gomez, Rodrigo Almanza and Cohl-Fitz Hughes all graduates of Moline High School, Elisabeth Tarpey was home-schooled $1,500.00 annually for the next four years. Gomez plans to major in Biology at University of IL, Champaign, IL. Almanza plans to major in Computer Network Administration at St. Ambrose University, Davenport IA.  Hughes plans to major in Kinesiology/Sports Management at Eastern IL University, Charleston, IL. Tarpey plans to major in Civil Engineering at the University of IL, Champaign,IL. The fund was established through the generosity of Clem T. Hanson (1901-1985), a former Moline businessman and community leader.

DARE Scholarship: Noah Vyncke, Rodrigo Almanza graduates of Moline High School,  and Collin O’Keeffe graduate of Alleman High School, $1,000.00 each.  Vyncke plans to major in Chemical Engineering at BlackHawk College, Moline, IL. Almanza plans to major in Computer Networking at St. Ambrose University, Davenport, IA and O’Keeffe plans to major in Business at University of WI, Madison, WI. The DARE scholarship is based upon the principles of the former DARE anti-drugs program in Moline-Coal Valley elementary schools. The scholarship provides funds to Moline High School graduates based on academic merit, good citizenship, attendance, and active involvement.

Lee McAllister Scholarship:  Ryan Reed, $1,000.00, graduate of Moline High School.  Reed plans to major in Elementary Education at University Central FL, Orlando, FL.  The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate planning to major in education. This scholarship was established in memory of Lee McAllister who taught in Moline School District No. 40 from 1948 to 1981.

Stan Woods Scholarship:  Peyton Hansen, $1,000.00, graduate of Moline High School.  Hansen plans to major in Chemistry and Music Performance at Augustana College, Rock Island IL. The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate based on community involvement, leadership and academic achievement. This scholarship was established in memory of Stan Woods who was a teacher, guidance counselor and dean of students in Moline School District No. 40.  Former students, co-workers, parents, and the community have contributed to the Woods Scholarship Fund.

Srikanth Yerra Scholarship: Anna Finch, $1,000.00, graduate of Moline High School. Finch is planning to major in Biology at Greenville University, Greenville, IL. This scholarship provides funds to a Moline School District graduate or community college student based on financial need and potential for future personal achievement. The family established this scholarship in memory of Srikanth Yerra, a 2005 graduate of Moline High School.

Hazel Van Arsdale Scholarship:  Katelyn Holt, $1,000.00, graduate of Moline High School. Holt is planning to major in Music Education and plans to attend Central College, Pella, IA. The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduating senior based on financial need, potential for future personal achievement.

Sherrard Academic Foundation, through the Moline Foundation, awarded seven scholarships to graduating seniors from Sherrard High School. Isaac Boraas, $1,000.00. plans to major in Agriculture Engineering/Business and attend Iowa State University, Ames, IA; McKara Caldwell, $1,000.00.  Caldwell plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, IN. Shawn Aschemann, $1,000.00.  Aschemann plans to attend Illinois State University, Normal, IL.  Austin Moon   $1,000.00.  Moon plans to major in Accounting and Management
and plans to attend Western Illinois University, Moline, IL. Sasha Celada $1,000.00. Celada
Plans to major in Biochemistry and plans to attend Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, AZ.
Megan Dorsey $750.00 Dorsey plans to major in Nursing and plans to attend Black Hawk College, Moline IL. Grace DeBacker $750.00. DeBacker plans to major in Education and plans to attend Black Hawk College, Moline, IL

Ina Banks Scholarship: Rebecca Graham, $1,000.00. Graham plans to major in English and attend Western IL University. Moline, IL The scholarship was established in 2011. Applicants must have successfully completed at least two years of their undergraduate work, and should be entering their junior or senior year of college.

Moline High School Class of ’65: Jenna Martel, $1,000.00, graduate of Moline High School. Martel plans to major in Nursing and plans to attend Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN. The fund was established by the MHS Class of ’65. Scholarship/Betterment program for selected MHS graduates who seek to better themselves and to contribute to society.

Chris “Spey” VanSpeybroeck Memorial Scholarship: Jacob Tauke, graduate of Rock Island High School and Reagan Bush, graduate of Alleman High School, $1,000. each. Tauke plans to major in Pre-Pharmacy and plans to attend Drake University, Des Moines, IA. Bush plans to major in Physical Therapy and plans to attend St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. The Chris “SPEY” VanSpeybroeck Memorial is a non-profit memorial scholarship fund started in August of 2012. The primary goal of the Memorial is to educate and increase awareness of meningococcal disease and provide scholarships to graduating seniors from local Illinois High Schools who will attest to obtaining the vaccination.

Butterworth/Deere Wiman Scholarship:  Amelia Adams, Erin Geyer, Greta Long
all graduates of Moline High School, and Abigail Just graduate from Alleman High School $2,000 annually for the next four years.  Adams plans to major in English Education/Music and attend Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, IN. Geyer plans to major in Psychology/Physical Therapy and attend Clarke University, Dubuque, IA. Long plans to major in Music Therapy and attend IL State University, Normal, IL. Just plans to major in Nursing and attend Southern IL University, Edwardsville, IL. Scholarship selection is based not only on academic achievement and financial need, but also on a student’s extracurricular activities, especially in the field of art, music and community service.

Doug Reynolds Rotary Scholarship: Cheyanne Cortez, graduate from United Township High School, $1,000.00.  Cortez plans to attend Black Hawk College, Moline, IL. The Doug Reynolds Scholarship was established by United Township High School graduate Doug Reynolds to provide funds to a deserving UTHS graduate to assist in obtaining a post-Secondary college or university education. This scholarship is primarily based on financial need.

Jack Dye Scholarship: Cohl-Fitch-Hughes, graduate from Moline High School, $1,000.00
Hughes plans to major in Kinesiology Sport Management and attend Eastern IL University, Charleston, IL. Jack Dye was a well-known teacher and coach in Moline and Aledo, IL.
He loved coaching basketball, golf and tennis and enjoyed the daily challenge of engaging students in timely discussions about the social sciences.

Lee Womack Scholarship: Kara Christiansen, graduate of Moline High School, $1,000.
Christiansen plans to major in Education or Business and plans to attend University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. The scholarship was established by Womack’s wife, Peggy and the Lee Womack Memorial Golf Outing Steering Committee. Annually since his death, a golf outing has been held in his memory to raise funds for a local charity. In 2004, the scholarship fund was established and is now administered by the Moline Foundation.

Anyone is welcome to contribute to any of the above scholarship funds.  The donation will be noted as a charitable contribution.

The Moline Foundation, founded in 1953, is a community foundation which provides grants to benefit health, human services, education, community development, the arts and other charitable organizations which help the citizens of Moline and the surrounding area, including the Quad Cities.

The Moline Foundation receives and administers charitable gifts in Scott County, Iowa, and Rock Island, Henry, Mercer, Warren, Henderson and McDonough counties in Illinois.
