The US Navy’s Blue Angels have hired their first female display pilot. Lt Amanda Lee, one of the six new officers joining the Blue Angels Team for the 2023 air show season, will join the squadron as an F/A-18E/F display pilot on Monday. Although women have previously joined the Blue Angels, no one has ever been chosen to fly a demonstration. As the first female pilot for the Blue Angels, Kate Higgins flew the C-130 Fat Albert transport from 2014 until 2016.
Lee was raised in Mounds View, Minnesota, and went to school there. She made the decision to enlist in the Navy while obtaining her degree. According to the US Navy, she enrolled in the Recruit Training Command in Illinois and graduated in 2007. She took part in the Seaman-to-Admiral Commissioning Program before beginning her career as an electronics technician for the aviation industry. In 2013, she received her commission and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Old Dominion University. Then, in April 2016, Lee became a recognised navy aviator and paved the path for women to serve in the armed forces.

Lee considers Mariner to be an inspiration and claims that she paved the path for females in this field. She feels honoured to pilot the same plane for which she once performed maintenance. “Equal opportunity” won’t be a term we use in the future, she told the New York Post, “because of women like Capt. Mariner.”
The Blue Angels’ commanding officer and flight commander, Capt. Brian Kesselring, reported that they had “an enormous number of applications from all over the world” this year.
