The Story of His Family and Childhood
His parents, Tai and Larissa, brought him into the world in Okene, Nigeria. His father, Tai, is from Nigeria. He met Aliu’s mother, Larissa, when he was in Kyiv on a track and field scholarship. He has a brother named Edward, with whom he is very close.
He says that he and his family are Ukrainian Canadians and that they follow Ukrainian culture. Aliu was seven years old when his parents decided to move the family to Canada and settle in the Toronto area. They did this because they were worried about the political situation after the Soviet Union broke up.
At first, Tai’s education to become a computer programmer was hard on his family. Before he moved to Canada, Aliu had never played hockey. He spoke Russian and Ukrainian very well.
After getting his first pair of skates at a yard sale, he joined a house league in the Parkdale neighborhood of Toronto. He was good at the sport from the start, and after a few years, the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League picked him in the first round (OHL).
He first played hockey when he was 10 years old
Akim started playing hockey when he was 10 and bought a set of skates at a garage sale that were four sizes too big. After three years, he was a member of the very best hockey team, the Toronto Marlboros. Akim was chosen by the Windsor Spitfires in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League Draft when he was 16 years old.
Two years after being picked by the OHL, he was picked by the Chicago Blackhawks with the second pick in the second round of the NHL Draft. At age 19, Akim got a job with the American Hockey League’s Rockford Ice Hogs.
In 2011, he joined the Calgary Flames, which is a team in the National Hockey League (NHL). Akim played in the OHL for four years, splitting his time between the Sudbury Wolves and the London Knights. After that, he became a full-time professional.
Akim has been an important part of the movement for change in the hockey world and in society as a whole. He has fought for racial equality, diversity, and better access to sports, especially hockey, for young BIPOC people.

Aliu played for the Peoria Rivermen and the Gwinnett Gladiators in the ECHL, and he spent the rest of the 2010–11 season with the Chicago Wolves, which is the AHL team of the Atlanta Thrashers.
For the 2011–12 NHL season, the Atlanta Thrashers moved north and changed their name to the Winnipeg Jets. He wasn’t in the plans of the new management, so he was cut from the roster of Winnipeg’s AHL team and started the season with the ECHL’s Colorado Eagles.

Early years
Aliu was born in Nigeria, in Okene, but he grew up in Ukraine, in Kyiv. His Nigerian father, Tai, went to college in Kyiv, Ukraine, on a track and field scholarship. There, he met Aliu’s Ukrainian mother, Larissa, and they got married. Edward is his brother. Aliu says he is Ukrainian Canadian and that he and his family live according to Ukrainian culture. He also says that if the Ukrainian national hockey team had asked him, he would have played for them. [2] Aliu still talks to his family in Ukraine. Aliu’s parents moved to the Toronto area when he was 7 because they didn’t like the way things were going politically after the Soviet Union broke up. At first, Tai’s studies to become a computer programmer were hard on his family.
Aliu was fluent in Ukrainian and Russian when he moved to Canada, but he didn’t know any English and had never played hockey. He bought his first pair of skates at a garage sale, and then he joined a house league in the Parkdale neighborhood of Toronto. He was good at the game from the start, and after a few years, the Windsor Spitfires picked him in the first round of the OHL draft.
Getting a job
Early in his first season in the OHL, 2005–2006, Aliu got into a fight with Steve Downie during practice. Downie cross-checked Aliu in the face, knocking out seven of his teeth. Aliu went to get help and then went back to the ice to fight Downie. Aliu refused to take part in a hazing ritual that would have made him and the other new recruits stand naked in a small bus bathroom. This was the main cause of the incident. The fight and what caused it were all over the news, and Aliu’s relationship with his teammates got worse. Because of this, Downie was suspended for five games and Aliu was suspended for one game. Both players asked to be traded out of Windsor. For these things, the league banned Moe Mantha from coaching for 40 games and took away his job as general manager for a year. The team had to pay a $35,000 fine. In 2020, Aliu talked about his time with the Spitfires in more detail. He said that he thought Downie had treated him badly in this and other situations because of Aliu’s different race and ethnic background.
After the incident, the Spitfires traded Aliu to the Sudbury Wolves. The OHL rules at the time said that 16-year-olds couldn’t be traded, so he had to sit out for two months.
During that season, he played in a total of 47 games and scored 10 goals and had 10 assists. He was still a controversial figure in the OHL. Early in the 2006–07 season, he was suspended for ten games, but the league’s scouting services ranked him as the fifth best prospect for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He was suspended for the last two games of the regular season, but he came back to play 21 playoff games and help the Wolves get to the finals, where they lost to the Plymouth Whalers.
He had a reputation as a hard-to-manage player going into the draft, and despite his early rating, he didn’t get picked until the 56th spot in the second round, by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Aliu swore after the draft that he would make teams wish they had picked him earlier.
Aliu stayed in junior hockey for the 2007–08 OHL season, but he was traded to the London Knights and joined a new team. It was his best junior season because he got 61 points in 60 games. After his junior season was over, he played his first professional games with the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago’s AHL affiliate, for two games. For the 2008–09 season, Aliu was sent back to the junior level. He was traded back to Sudbury in the middle of the season. Between the two teams, he scored 42 points in 45 games.
