After gaining widespread recognition, Tyson started his own show on CTV called “The Ian Tyson Show”, where Sylvia and “The Great Speckled Bird” often appeared. Together with music producer and manager Neil MacGonigill, he released the album “Old Corrals and Sagebrush” which was very well received at the time. In 2005, his song “Four Strong Winds” was selected as the Best Canadian Song of All Time in the “50 Songs: Canadian Version” series. He influenced young Canadian artists such as Neil Young, Johnny Cash and Judy Collins, who produced their own versions of his song “Four Strong Winds”. Tyson’s song “One Single River” was recorded by Bob Dylan and “The Band” but was never released. He and Sylvia sang their signature song “Four Strong Winds” together at the 50th anniversary of the Mariposa Folk Festival.

Ian Tyson died on December 29, 2022 at the age of 89 on his ranch in Alberta. According to his manager, he was constantly having health problems and had once had a heart attack. He also had open-heart surgery in 2015. He was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame alongside Sylvia in 1989. In October 1994, he became a member of the Order of Canada and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award. Ian and Sylvia were inducted into the Mariposa Hall of Fame in 2006.
