They say that the best camera is the one you have with you, and more often than not, that camera is attached to your smartphone. Grabbing quick images and videos is easier than it’s ever been, but sometimes you hit that record button a little too early and get 34 seconds of fluff before the good stuff. Here’s how to fix that.
Just a couple of short years ago, trimming videos on a mobile device was more of a pain than anything, especially since it was a little different on every phone. Today, thanks to Google’s Photos app, not only is trimming videos quick and easy, but it’s also the same across the board, regardless of which device you’re using. Nice.
To get started, you’ll need to fire up the Photos app. This should be pre-installed on essentially every modern Android phone, so if you haven’t been using it, you’re missing out on some good stuff—like automatic backups. If you don’t have it, you can download it for free from Google Play.
If this is your first run with the Photos app, you’ll have to first set up the Back Up & Sync option. It’s toggled to “on” by default (which I personally recommend leaving on), so if you’re good with all the details, just hit “Done.” Now, onward to the actual video trimming part.
Go ahead and open the video you’d like to trim. See that little pencil icon at the bottom? That’s your button. Tap that little guy.
If this happens to be an older video and you’ve been using Photos for a while to back up your stuff, you may have to re-download it before the pencil shows up. To do that, just tap the three-button menu in the top right and select “Download.”
The edit menu is stupid-simple, with an easy-to-use selection tool for trimming, and a button to rotate the video. That’s pretty much all there is to it—highlight the section of video you’d like to keep, then tap the Save button in the top right. You can also hit the play button in the center of the video to check your selection before trimming, just to make sure it’s perfect.
Once the video has been trimmed, it will automatically save. The old video isn’t altered in any way, but instead a new video file is created. You don’t have to name it or anything—everything is handled automatically.
And that’s all there is to it. See, wasn’t that easier than you expected? No, no, don’t thank me—thank Google.

The Google Photos app on Android includes the ability to cut or trim videos you recorded with your camera app. You may have the Google Photos app on your device since many Android phones include the app by default. Make sure the video you want to edit is stored on your Android device.
Open the Google Photos app and search for the video you want to edit.

Tap the screen outside of the video to display the editing options.
Tap the Edit icon, the three-horizontal lines with a vertical mark through each (in the lower center portion of the screen), to access the Edit options.
The video displays with two white Edit handles, one on the left and one on the right. Tap and hold either Edit handle, then drag the handle to adjust the length of the video. Repeat this step with the other Edit handle, if desired.
Tap Save copy in the upper-right corner to save the video.
Your original video and your trimmed video are saved in Google Photos.
Use Built-in Video Editing Capabilities on Samsung
If you want to trim or crop a video on a Samsung device, the built-in controls in the Gallery provide access to the basics. Much like the controls for Google Photos, you can crop and trim videos. You also have options to adjust the resolution of the video, change the aspect ratio, and add filters and other artistic touches.
On your Samsung device, navigate to and open the video you want to edit.
Tap the pencil icon in the lower-left corner.
Tap and drag from either end of the video frame line near the bottom of the screen to crop the video.
If you don't want to make additional changes, tap Save in the upper-right corner to save a copy of the cropped video. The original video remains on your device, with no changes.
If desired, tap an icon on the Editing toolbar to:
- Add a filter.
- Apply Beauty Mode.
- Add Closed Captioning.
- Add stickers and emoji.
- Make creative changes to coloring and temperature.
- Adjust the play speed of the video.
- Add music to the video.
You can also tap Resolution at the top of the screen to change the video resolution and reduce the file size for the video.
Alternative Ways to Cut or Trim Video
Even if your Android device lacks the Google Photos app, the built-in video camera app may offer a similar set of basic video editing capabilities. Nearly all basic editors work as described above. Select a video, tap an Edit option, slide from the end to trim, then save the video.

How to Trim a Video Using Kinemaster
To trim your video you’ll need to upload it first. To add your video, tap on the “+” sign in the middle circle.
Once your video is added, tap on the checkmark at the top right. To trim your video, tap on the video at the bottom, and after the border will turn yellow. Towards the top left you’ll see a scissor icon.
Tap on it and a new trimming options will appear in that same area. If the options are greyed out, slide the video back and forth so the options light up. You can trim to the left or right of the playhead, split at playhead, or split and insert freeze frame. Choose the option that best fits your needs.
How to Use the Transition Feature in Kinemaster
Adding a transition to your videos is an easy task. Add a video like you normally would, but this time choose a few more. You’ll notice that in between each video there will be a grey square with a line in the middle. To add a transition, tap on that square.
Tap on the transition effect option and various options. You can choose from options such as 3D transitions, classic, fun, picture-in-picture, powerful, presentation, text, and more. How to Do a Voiceover in Kinemaster
Once you’ve added the videos, you want to add the voiceover too. Tap on the mic icon. The recording won’t start until you tap on the Start button, but you can see that the mic is on because a green light will begin to flash.
Once you tap on the Start button, the parts of the video that the voiceover will be added to will be highlighted in red. When you tap on the stop button, the part of the video that was in red will now have a purple line below it. You will also see additional options such as to review, re-record, loop, voice filter, voice volume, and trim.
How to Add Text to a Kinemaster Video
Adding text to a video is a fundamental and essential tool. To add your text and personalize it too, tap on the Layer button to the left of the red camera button. When you tap on the option, a new window of options will appear. The text option will be towards the bottom.
Type your message, and tap on the OK button. Your text will be small at first, but by dragging it out, you can make it bigger. Tap on the uneven As, and you can change the font of the text. The animation option will give you ways you can introduce the text such as slide down, slide up, clockwise, drop, and more.
Swipe down and you can also add things such as shadow, glow, outline, background color, full-width background, and more. To change the color of the text, tap on the white circle to the right of the scissor icon.
How to Add Music to Your Videos
Videos are a lot better when you add music. For example, let’s say that you want to add a song you have on your device. Place the red line at the bottom where you want the song to begin. Tap on the music icon, and choose the song.
When you choose your song, a red plus sign will appear. The audio will start to play so you can confirm if that’s the song you want to add. If you’re sure that’s the song, tap on the red plus sign, and the name of the song will appear at the bottom.

Kinemaster is a free editing app for Android full of great, free features. Once you get the hang of how to use it, it’s not as intimidating as it was in the beginning. What do you think about the app?
