lt was inevitable but rather sudden nonetheless.

Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham was expected to be a top candidate for jobs as a GM elsewhere this year after he was offered a job last year. The Washington Commanders wasted no time turning to Cunningham before Black Monday had even ended in the NFL.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Washington Commanders want to talk to Ryan Poles' right-hand man about their vacant general manager position.

Coach Ron Rivera was the defacto GM with the Commanders. Washington fired Rivera on Monday and new owner Josh Harris has hired former Vikings GM Rick Spielman and former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers to find a GM. According to Rapoport, the search starts with Cunningham.

Cunningham has 14 years of NFL experience. Last offseason, Cunningham interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals and was widely reported to have been offered the job but turned it down.

Poles frequently credits Cunningham with helping greatly in the acquisition of their current personnel. He was with the Eagles under Howie Roseman in the past and also in Baltimore before that.
